WHY CREATIVITY IS SPIRITUAL
Beyond our finite lives there is a higher power that created everything. This higher power, known by many as God, can be thought of as the ultimate creator. The process of creating anything is a form of creativity. Therefore, one of the most spiritual things that we can do is create. When we tap into our own creativity, we are mimicking God. Since we are all manifestations of God, the ability to create is a God given talent that we have all been blessed with.
With this in mind, what better way to honor that higher power than to do the same. The act of creating should be seen as a spiritual act. The very fabric of your life is a direct representation of what you have created. Stop for a minute and consider all the potential creations. Think about creating your dream business, creating beautiful art or music. Or, the pinnacle of all creation, which is the creation of another human being. The process of bringing a child into this world is possibly one the most spiritual things people can do.
I believe that the soul wants to create every day. Deep within us there is a yearning to transform the ideas in our mind into tangible things in this world. We crave the process of manifesting our genius from our head into something that we can hold in our hands. We want so badly to know exactly what we are capable of creating and how far we can go. As spectators we want to see creativity in all walks of life. We want to explore art and music, see all the wild aspects of nature, and be included in all the wondrous creations around us. We want to venture into new territories, have new experiences, and discover the novelty of life.
Whether we are creating personally or professionally, we are creating. This is action in motion, and every creation is spiritual. If we start viewing it this way, then maybe we would treat our actions with more respect. But in order to do this we need to have a higher level of consciousness. We must be aware of the spiritual essence that lies in each one of our decisions. We need to understand that every choice we make has consequences, and that every action has a reaction. Every action is a creation into this world, and we must own our creations no matter how small or big they are. This is the foundation of being response able—responsible.
SHARING MY CREATIVITY
The more I explore this path of writing, the more compelled I feel to share my creativity. I continuously make the decision to share my work and expose my writing, which ultimately means exposing part of myself. Every word is an extension my mind, and every sentence is an extension of my heart. Having you as my audience is a privilege and writing this piece is my gift to you. But I wouldn’t have it any other way, because I want to know how deep I can go, and how intently you will listen. So, let’s skip over the lies and dive right into the waters of reality. And maybe, we’ll find each other in midst of the creativity process that is life.
THE FEAR OF BEING SEEN
Within all of us there is an inherent desire to express our creativity and allow others to see what we have done. And if creativity is spiritual in nature, then sharing what we create is like sharing a piece of our spirit.
However, it takes courage to be seen by others. Because we aren’t sure what would happen if we exposed ourselves to the world. There is an underlying fear that other people won’t accept us. Often, that fear of rejection and criticism outweighs our motivation to share what is in our hearts. The more we subordinate to the fear the more separated we get from the connection with ourselves, and all of those around us.
Counter to these irrational fears, if we just had the courage to allow ourselves to be seen, we would find more connection and belong. But the limited beliefs and painful memories of the past create the illusion that sharing ourselves and our work will lead to pain. So, we must find a way to move through those illusions, because what we truly desire is on the other side of them.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
As human beings, it’s impossible to create without thinking and caring about the outcome. And the more time we spend working on our craft, the more our creativity becomes personal. It’s an inevitable reality. Because with more time and effort comes more attachment to what we are creating. In most cases, our attachment is on the outcome, or the end product. We latch onto the creation itself and how it will serve us in the end, and we lose sight of the creative process that inspired us in the first place. Caring too much about the outcome is a sure sign that the intention behind it is inauthentic. Therefore, we must find a way to move beyond our attachment to the outcome and stay connected to the process of creativity.
Every time you show up and participate in the process, the more connected you get to spirituality. And the further you venture into that creativity, the more you discover about yourself and the world around you. The deeper you go the more access you gain. Eventually, it’s like seeing into another world—a glimpse into the spiritual essence of creativity. When you immerse yourself into the process and find a way to love it, then meaning, significance, and fulfillment, begin to saturate your being.
