THE TWO VOICES IN YOUR HEAD
I talk to myself, and all the voices inside, all the time. If you think I am crazy that’s perfectly fine, because I know for a fact that you do too. If you don’t believe me, just go meditate for an hour and then tell me that you don’t do the same. Believe me now? Awesome! Now we’re both crazy.
When you pay attention, you’ll find that there are at least two voices going back and forth. Whenever you are faced with a decision, voice # 1 immediately says what you should do. “Go talk to her.” “Start your own business.” “Go to Europe.” “Quit your job.” “Go help that person in need.” “Say I love you.” That voice happens in an instant, and that is the voice of your intuition. Voice # 1 comes from your soul—from the depths of who you are within this very moment, offering insight and direction. But, when you wait just a little bit longer, voice # 2 starts talking. The longer you wait the louder this voice gets, and the more information it gives you—this is your mind. Voice # 2 can easily fill you up with unnecessary negativity. “Who am I to go and do that?” What if I fail?” “What will they think of me?” “I can’t afford that.” “I’ll never get there.” “That pizza is going to be amazing.”
So, why would we ever listen voice # 2? Well, let’s break it down. Your mind holds more than one voice—it’s the culmination of all the voices from your past. Your mind has a whole data collection of memories and stories about the people from your life, such as you parents, siblings, teachers, authority figures, etc. Your mind has used all of this to shape the way you talk to yourself. There is nothing wrong with all of this, however, this information comes from the past. So as long as you are listening to voice # 2 (your mind), you are listening to the past. You are comparing what happened then to make your decision now. You are making choices from everything that is familiar, which is why voice # 2 so commonly questions voice # 1. It is because of voice # 2 that you doubt yourself and hold so fiercely onto fear. There will always be a limitation to the potential that you can experience when you listen to and rely on voice # 2.
People often say, “I just need time to think about it.” No. they don’t need time. What they are saying is that they don’t trust their intuition, and they need their mind to gather everything from the past to decide. By doing so, they delay their decision, create unnecessary stress, and let fear run all over the situation. In most cases, people have trained themselves to drown out voice # 1 (intuition) with voice # 2 (the mind). The mind is an amazing part of us, however, it’s not superior to the soul.
Voice # 1 is the source of your true potential. This is your soul encouraging you to choose something new and expansive. If you’re struggling to hear this voice, start with the small things and build from there. Every morning, I ask myself how long I should meditate. Voice # 1 immediately tells me how long, then I do it. Today it was one hour, but most days, it tells me that time doesn’t matter. I am slowly getting better at listening to and following voice # 1.
CHOOSING SOMETHING NEW
Holding onto the past only perpetuates unnecessary effort and suffering, which consumes the potential to experience the now. Everything that is currently happening, no matter how small, is novel or new. We are designed to step forward through each moment with an open heart and mind. In order to do this, we must show up with tremendous courage and faith. Without these attributes we succumb to unwanted behaviors and results. This happens when we resist the new, and that resistance makes us constrict and close off the flow of moving energy. We usually do this in an effort to avoid further pain and loss. But we don’t have to resist. Instead, we can view each new moment as an opportunity for change and possibility. For me, it’s about holding space for those feelings of possibility to enrich my life, and to accept the beautiful unknown.
The day opens up to me, to offer its gifts of infinity. My senses are heightened and clear, and my path is starting to reveal itself.
The voices from before are trying to hold me back, but they are not my words and they didn’t come from me.
Beyond all the noise, and all that isn’t me there are feelings growing inside, of what the possibilities can be.
I step forward into the emptiness that is full of uncertainty, and the only thing that lights my way is my still burning curiosity.
